Oil paints have been around since the 7th century when it first came into use. It gained popularity around the 14th century when artists sighted its expediencies and came into vogue by the 17th century. There are several reasons, but first and foremost they are preferred for the phenomenal results they bring in skillful hands. A picture speaks a thousand words
I will enunciate their some of their trenchant qualities that makes them desirable by many artists.
They Dry Slowly.
Oil paints pigments are comprised of smaller particles that are suspended in a drying oil. This slows down the drying process. While this nature may seem bothersome to some artists, many would find it preferable.
Completing a painting takes several weeks.
They can be exposed to air for several weeks without drying. While this buys time, it makes it difficult to move on to the next stage of the painting.
The colors created by oil paints are lustrous and captivating.
Their longevity. They are hard-wearing and can sustain its quality through generations.
They Concoct Exceptional Blends.
The strokes and blends created in oil is indeed arduous to achieve via other mediums. Their slow drying nature can be used to create very subtle blends. Working in a perpetual slow drying environment helps gain smooth transition during the painting process. This becomes a criteria especially when painting portraits where there is a need for constant revisiting and tweaking. This could serve as a downside at times, when colors not meant to be blended gets mixed. Obtaining crisp and sharp edges becomes laborious. To a beginner the colors on oil sometimes turn to “muddy colors” due to unintentional mixing.
They say everything good comes with a price to pay. Here are some negatives:-
Preparing the Canvas Board.
Oil paints are corrosive by nature and a good deal of time must be spent on preparing the canvas board. To avoid this process, pre-primed canvas boards are now available in some places.
Color Shift is not Immediate.
As the oil sinks in to the canvas, there will be a color shift which is not apparent immediately. Some areas would be more glossy than others during the drying process and the area we are working on needs to be “oiled out” again. Absorption and too much use of thinners leads to dullness.
Cleaning the Brushes
Cleaning the brushes needs turpentine and mineral spirits. (Both toxic)
One definite con is the “yellowing” quality. Oil paints have a slight yellow tinge to them that’s caused by the oil itself (think olive oil). Overtime additional yellowing takes place due to oxidation. The degree of oxidation would depend on the binding agent used.
May not be suited to work on in the presence of children/pets etc
The smell of Turpentine
If painting is carried out in confined space fumes from thinners, white spirit and turpentine can be overwhelming and toxic. An irritant to sensitive skin, also turpentine rags are inflammable.
