Broadway Boogie Woogie

Broadway Boogie Woogie is a painting by Piet Mondrian finished in 1943 after he had relocated to New York in 1940.

Contrasted to his earlier works, the canvas is separated into a much larger variety of squares. He spent many of his career painting abstract work, this painting is inspired by clear real-world instances: the city grid of Manhattan, and also boogie-woogie, an African-American Blues songs Mondrian loved.

The painting was acquired by the Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins for the price of $800 at the Valentine Gallery in New York City City after Martins, as well as Mondrian both, displayed there in 1943. Martins, later on, donated the painting to the Gallery of Modern Art in New York City.
